The Milky Way lights up the sky behind the Bodie Island Lighthouse, in North Carolina. The lighthouse was built in 1859 and overlooks what is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic, where over 5000 ships have sunk.
Perseid meteor shower, Milky Way, and an old farmstead in northern NC. It was amazing watching the Perseid shower in action over the early weekend and definitely the most meteors I have ever seen in one night. There are 11 meteor trails in this image, from a stack of images over the course of an hour. Captured mid-August 2016.
Milky Way rise over a boardwalk looking out over the Atlantic Ocean. From along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore in the Outer Banks. The lack of light pollution here allows the Milky Way to light up the sky while looking east on a clear moonless night.
The universe and my favorite tree lit by the rising moon, at the Rocky Knob Recreation Area along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. I have been planning this image for years, and I finally had the opportunity and good enough weather to give it a go. Captured a few days ago. Late August, 2016.
Full moon and cirrus clouds above Blanca Peak, part of the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. A partial moon dog is visible above Blanca Peak, caused by the refraction of moonlight in cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. Captured in April 2017.
